Handling and Shipping Labels

Handling and shipping labels are an essential component of the logistics and supply chain process as they provide crucial information about the contents of a package and its handling requirements. They include instructions on how to safely handle and transport packages, including warnings about fragile contents, instructions on keeping packages upright, or information about temperature-sensitive items.

At Kite, we supply:

  • This Way Up Labels – these indicate the correct orientation for packages
  • Fragile Handle With Care Labels – these dictate packages require delicate handling during transportation and storage
  • Caution Heavy Labels – these alert handlers to the weight of the package, indicating special handling or equipment may be required during transportation and storage. By doing so, these labels reduce the risk of injury or damage caused by improper lifting and handling
  • Do Not Bend Labels – these protect delicate or important documents, photographs, artwork, and flat items that may be easily damaged by bending or folding. Commonly applied to envelopes, mailers, and packages, these make handlers aware that the contents require careful handling
  • Do Not Double Stack Labels – typically applied to boxes, crates and pallets, these labels alert handlers to the fragile nature of the goods which may be crushed or damaged if stacked. They help to preserve the integrity of goods during transportation and storage

UN Labels

Also known as United Nations packaging symbols or UN markings, UN labels are standardized symbols used to identify hazardous materials during transport. They communicate important information about the contents of a package, including the type of hazard posed by the material and any special handling requirements it may have.

At Kite, we supply:

  • UN Battery Labels – provide important information regarding the classification, handling and transportation of batteries according to UN regulations to ensure safe handling, storage and transportation
  • UN3480 Labels – indicate the presence of lithium-ion batteries shipped by themselves
  • UN3481 Labels – specify that packages contain lithium-ion batteries within or alongside equipment
  • UN 3090 Labels – these are specifically for packages containing lithium-metal batteries which are shipped by themselves
  • UN 3091 Labels – these are also for packages containing lithium-metal batteries within or alongside equipment
  • Do Not Load In Passenger Aircraft Labels – warn airline shipping personnel against loading dangerous cargo that presents a safety risk onto passenger aircraft
  • Flammable Liquid Labels – identify packages containing highly flammable liquids, such as petrol, paint thinners and chemicals so they can be handled, stored and transported appropriately
  • Lithium Battery Class 9 Labels – are used as general label to indicate that a shipment contains lithium batteries without specifying the exact type
  • Miscellaneous Class 9 Battery Labels – indicate the presence of batteries that may potentially be hazardous, even if they don’t fit into the standard classifications for lithium batteries or other specific battery types

What exactly are UN labels and why do we need them?

UN labels follow a standardised system established by the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. Having such a system ensures consistency in the labelling of hazardous materials worldwide, enabling safe handling and transportation across international borders. Each label features a unique identification code that corresponds to a specific type of hazardous material depending on the risk it poses. This includes flammable liquids, corrosive substances and toxic gases, with labels colour coded in accordance with the primary hazard they present.

Companies involved in transporting hazardous materials must comply with UN labelling requirements as failure to do so results in legal consequences, fines and safety hazards.
